Icterus xanthocephalus was named by Bonaparte (1826). It is extant. It is the type species of Xanthocephalus.
It was recombined as Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus by Hay (1930), Schultz and Howard (1935), Oswald and Steadman (2011) and Clements et al. (2017).
