Palaeosolemya was named by Pojeta and Runnegar (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l]. Its type is Palaeosolemya ordovicicus.

It was assigned to Solemyoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Solemyidae by Bailey (2011).
