Phos gatunensis was named by Toula (1909) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Neotype used; Holotype lost.]. Its type specimen is USNM 643660, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Phos (Antillophos) gatunensis by Oinomikado (1939); it was recombined as Antillophos (Antillophos) candei gatunensis by Woodring (1964).
