Pitar cora was named by Brown and Pilsbry (1911). Its type specimen is ANSP (no number), a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Pitaria (Lamelliconcha) cora by Palmer (1927); it was recombined as Lamelliconcha cora by Woodring (1982).
