Venus circinata was named by Born (1778) [DISTRIBUTION: ?Oligocene or Early Miocene; ]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Chione circinata by Gabb (1873); it was recombined as Pitar circinata by Brown and Pilsbry (1911); it was recombined as Pitaria (Lamelliconcha) circinata by Maury (1912), Anderson (1929), Hodson and Hodson (1931) and Barrios (1960); it was recombined as Pitaria circinata by Olsson (1922); it was recombined as Lamelliconcha circinata by Hendy et al. (2008).
