Elasmognathus bairdii was named by Gill (1865). It is extant. It is the type species of Tapirus.
It was recombined as Tapirella bairdi by Palmer (1903) and Olson (1940); it was recombined as Tapirus bairdii by Slaughter (1966), Colbert (2005) and Ferrero and Noriega (2007).
