Opisthocoelus was named by Beushausen (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: S u D Fras]. Its type is Opisthocoelus concentricus.

It was reranked as Lunulicardium (Opisthocoelus) by Clarke (1904).

It was assigned to Lunulicardium by Clarke (1904); to Cardiolinae by Cox et al. (1969); and to Praecardioida by Sepkoski (2002).
