Holoeciscus was named by Foreman (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-l C Tour-l Sepkoski's reference number: 546,701]. Its type is Holoeciscus auceps.
It was assigned to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); to Holoeciscidae by Wang et al. (2003); and to Ceratoikiscidae by De Wever et al. (2001) and Noble et al. (2017).
