Cytherea tumens was named by Stenzel et al. (1957). It is extant. It is the type species of Pitar, Pitar (Pitar).

It was recombined as Pitar tumens by Römer (1857); it was recombined as Pitar (Pitar) tumens by Stenzel et al. (1957) and Woodring (1982).
