Paphies was named by Lesson (1831) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 899]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Mesodesmatinae by Vokes (1980); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mesodesmatidae by Lamprell and Whitehead (1992) and Beu (2006).
