Stephanocoenia duncani was named by Foster (1987). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is NMB Loc. 16817 - Río Cano [Gurabo Fm], which is in a Zanclean reef, buildup or bioherm limestone in the Gurabo Formation of the Dominican Republic.
