Limarca was named by Tate (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 530]. Its type is Limarca angustifrons.

It was assigned to Philobryidae by Vokes (1980); to Arcoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Limarcidae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
