Taxonomy
Murex polynematicus was named by Brown and Pilsbry (1911) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Miocene; Panama.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 1719, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Murex (Murex) polynematicus by Woodring (1959) and Perrilliat (1987); it was recombined as Murex (Murex) gilli polynematicus by Vokes (1963); it was recombined as Vokesimurex polynematicus by Merle (2003).
