Melaxinaea was named by Iredale (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Glycymeridinae by Vokes (1980); to Glycymerididae by Lamprell and Whitehead (1992); and to Arcoida by Sepkoski (2002).
