Aulacomya was named by Mörch (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant. Its type is Aulacomya magellanicus.
It was assigned to Mytilinae by Stilwell and Zinsmeister (1992); to Mytiloida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mytilidae by Vokes (1980), Gordillo (1991) and Mikkelsen (2006).
