Botulopsis was named by Reis (1926) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 94]. Its type is Botulopsis reisi.

It was assigned to Mytilidae by Vokes (1980); to Mytiloida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mysidiellidae by Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
