Terebratula capillata was named by Archiac (1847). It is the type species of Capillithyris.
It was recombined as Platythyris capillata by Cox and Middlemiss (1978); it was recombined as Capillithyris capillata by Katz (1974), Cooper (1983) and Gradinaru et al. (2006).
