Trichites was named by Lhuyd (1760) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori K l Sepkoski's reference number: 94]. Its type is Trichites plotii.

It was assigned to Mytiloida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pinnidae by Vokes (1980) and Alencáster et al. (2009).
