Xenostrobus was named by Wilson (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 899]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Mytilidae by Vokes (1980) and Lamprell and Healy (1998); and to Mytiloida by Sepkoski (2002).
