Actinodesma was named by Sandberger (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Fame-u]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Pterineidae by Vokes (1980); to Pteriacea by Amler (1992); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
