Amphidonte was named by Fischer von Waldheim (1829) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 159]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Exogyrinae by Vokes (1980) and Stilwell (1998); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
