Anopaea was named by Eichwald (1861) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-u K Albi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 663].

It was assigned to Inoceramidae by Vokes (1980); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Anopaeinae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
