Hylonomidae was named by Fritsch (1883). It is not extant. Its type is Hylonomus.

It was assigned to Microsauria by Hay (1902); and to Microsauria by Moodie (1916) and Kuhn (1946).

R. L. Moodie 1916Body slender and lizard-like; skull narrow, with smooth or faintly sculptured bones; neural spines of vertebras well developed, and long, slender ribs. Teeth smooth, or with grooved summits. The whole body covered with sculptured scutes. Internal gills may be developed. (from Lydekker, 1890, based on Fritsch, 1883-1899).
