Chaenocardia was named by Meek (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-u]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Chaenocardiinae by Vokes (1980); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chaenocardiidae by Newell and Boyd (1995) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
