Taxonomy
Cornellites was named by Williams (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-l D Fras-u]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Pterinea (Cornellites) by Maillieux (1935); it was synonymized subjectively with Ptychopteria by Cox et al. (1969); it was reranked as Ptychopteria (Cornellites) by Bailey (1983).

It was assigned to Pterinea by Maillieux (1935); to Pterineidae by Vokes (1980); to Ptychopteria by Bailey (1983); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
