Datta was named by Healey (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Rhae]. It is not extant. Its type is Datta oscillaris.

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Dattinae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Dattidae by Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
