Echinorbis was named by Waterhouse (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 745]. Its type is Echinorbis papillosa.

It was assigned to Limidae by Waterhouse (1987); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Echinorbinae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
