Eligmus was named by Eudes-Deslongchampes (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo J Call-u Sepkoski's reference number: 93,99]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Malleidae by Al-Harithi (1997); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
