Elimata was named by Dickins (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-l P Tatr]. Its type is Elimata guppyi.

It was assigned to Anomiidae by Vokes (1980); to Limidae by Waterhouse (1987) and Waterhouse (2001); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
