Enantiostreon was named by Bittner (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: P Djhu Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Enantiostreon hungaricum.

It was assigned to Ostreoida by Carter (1990); to Prospondylidae by Hautmann (2001); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).

M. Hautmann 2001Relatively small forms of variable outline. Ligament area narrower, but resilifer broader than in other members of the Prospondylidae, thus more oyster-like in appearance
