Etalia was named by Begg and Campbell (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: ZR88]. Its type is Etalia johnstoni.

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Eobuchiinae by Wasmer and Hautmann (2012); and to Asoellidae by Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
