Euptera was named by Dartevelle (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. Its type is Euptera zambiensis.

It was assigned to Bakevelliidae by Cox et al. (1969); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
