Excellichlamys was named by Iredale (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Pectinidae by Lamprell and Whitehead (1992) and Todd (2001); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
