Pronorites timorensis was named by Haniel (1915).

It was recombined as Metapronorites timorensis by Ruzhentsev (1978), Zhou (1987), Leonova (2002), Ehiro et al. (2014), Zhou (2017) and Ehiro and Ozawa (2020).
