Fortipecten was named by Yabe and Hatai (1940) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio-u]. It is extant. It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Pectinidae by Addicott (1974) and Aberhan et al. (2004); and to Fortipectinini by Bouchet et al. (2010).
