Fransonia was named by Newell and Boyd (1995) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1227]. Its type is Fransonia wyomingensis.

It was assigned to Hunanopectinidae by Newell and Boyd (1995); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
