Inoceramus was named by Sowerby (1814) [Sepkoski's age data: J l K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 545].

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Inoceramidae by Kennedy et al. (1973), Kinger and Kennedy (1980), Vokes (1980), Gebhardt (2001), El Qot (2006) and Wild and Stilwell (2016).
