Cancer punctata was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Guia punctata by Holmes (1860); it was recombined as Persephona punctatus by Todd and Collins (2005); it was recombined as Persephona punctata by Rathbun (1935), Collins and Morris (1976), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Luque et al. (2017).
