Venericardia megastropha was named by Gray (1825) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene-Recent; Baja California-Ecuador, Galapagos]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Cardita megastropha by Hertlein and Strong (1946) and Durham (1950); it was recombined as Cardita (Strophocardia) megastropha by Olsson (1961), Keen (1971) and Moore (1992); it was recombined as Strophocardia megastropha by Powell (2008) and Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012).
