Lopha was named by Röding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori-l R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Lophinae.
It was reranked as Ostrea (Lopha) by Woodring (1925), Oostingh (1935) and Ladd and Hoffmeister (1945).
