Pecten magnificus was named by Sowerby (1835). It is extant.

It was recombined as Pecten (Lyropecten) magnificus by Grant and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Chlamys (Nodipecten) magnifica by Hertlein (1972); it was recombined as Lyropecten magnificus by Smith (1991); it was recombined as Nodipecten magnificus by Grau (1950) and Waller (2007).
