Manticula was named by Waterhouse (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Mytilus problematicus.

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Manticulidae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Pergamidiidae by Carter (1990) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
