Mclearnia was named by Crickmay (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-u K Apti Sepkoski's reference number: 663]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mclearniinae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
