Merklinia was named by Sobetski (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 790]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pectinidae by Aberhan et al. (2004).
