Panopea generosa was named by Gould (1850). It is extant.

It was recombined as Panopaea generosa by Gould (1850); it was recombined as Glycimeris generosa by Cooper (1888); it was recombined as Panope generosa by Clark and Arnold (1923), Etherington (1931), Loel and Corey (1932), Durham (1944), Woodring and Bramlette (1950) and Valentine (1956); it was synonymized subjectively with Panope (Panope) abrupta by Moore (1963); it was synonymized subjectively with Panopea abrupta by Coan et al. (2000).
