Taxonomy
Monopteria was named by Meek and Worthen (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-u C Step-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Monopteriidae.

It was reranked as Pterinea (Monopteria) by Meek and Worthen (1866); it was synonymized subjectively with Limoptera by Babin (1966).

It was assigned to Pterinea by Meek and Worthen (1866); to Bivalvia by Meek and Worthen (1866); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Monopteriidae by Cox et al. (1969) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
