Undopecten was named by Waterhouse (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 1227]. It is the type genus of Undopectininae.
It was assigned to Etheripectinidae by Newell and Boyd (1995); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Undopectininae by Waterhouse (2001) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
