Taxonomy
Passalus was named by Fabricius (1792). It is extant. It is the type genus of Passalida, Passalinae, Passalini.
It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1792); to Coleoptera by Latreille (1796); to Scarabaeides by Latreille (1802); to Passalidae by Cockerell (1927), Carpenter (1992) and Krell (2000); and to Passalini by Reyes-Castillo (1977) and Bouchard et al. (2011).
