Paleowaagia was named by Newell and Boyd (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse-u P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 103]. Its type is Paleowaagia cooperi.
It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Pectinoida by Waller and Stanley (2005); and to Prospondylidae by Biakov and Mazaev (2023).
