Rhabdocidarinae was named by Lambert (1900). It is extant. Its type is Rhabdocidaris.

It was reranked as the subfamily Rhabdocidarinae by Nisiyama (1966), Fell (1966) and Kier (1980).

It was assigned to Stereocidaridae by Lambert (1900); and to Cidaridae by Nisiyama (1966), Fell (1966) and Kier (1980).
